Sterilised dog pound reopened

The Christchurch City Council dog shelter in Ruru Road has reopened after an outbreak of the canine disease, parvo virus, closed it last week. The pound was opened after it was inspected on Monday. It had been sterilised several times and all the dogs in it at the time of the outbreak destroyed, said the chief city health inspector, Mr Paul Millthorpe.

While the pound was closed the council had not picked up any stray dogs, as it had nowhere to take them, Mr Millthorpe said. Pound staff were fully conscious of the need for vigilance regarding the health of impounded dogs, but while dogs wandered uncontrolled the threat of further outbreaks of the disease at the shelter remained.
