Korean trawler in dry dock

A Korean stern trawler which fishes from the Port of Timaru is at Lyttelton for several weeks for maintenance and survey work. The 2500-ton Poong San was dry-docked last Friday for her annual survey and maintenance. The vessel is in New Zealand under a joint contract and has been using Timaru as a home port since May last year. She has a crew of 37 Koreans and stays at sea for about six or seven weeks, calling at Timaru to discharge her catch of orange roughy, squid, and hoki. Most of the fish is for the New Zealand market, the rest being transhipped to Korea. The Poong San is the only vessel of her type fishing out of Timaru and is likely to continue using the port for several years. Her crew will remain with the vessel until May next year, when a replacement crew will be flown from Korea. Her master is Captain Kim Taz Kwon. The Poong San will be in dock until Tuesday for repainting and maintenance on her propeller shaft. ARRIVALS Tasman Enterprise (6 a.m.), 5578, Dunedin (Scales).
