Flood of requests for S.C. papers

PA Wellington The Education Department is taking on temporary staff and setting up a special office to deal with the flood of requests for last year’s marked School Certificate scripts. Mr Brian Richards, the department’s director of administration, said yesterday that just over 3000 requests had been received since the decision to return the scripts was made a fortnight ago. The deadline for requests is September 14. Mr Richards said the department obtained temporary premises at Lower Hutt as a base for the work, and would need to hire additional staff in Christchurch and Auckland to process requests for scripts housed in those centres.

He said the 134 original requests made under the Official Information Act, which led to the decision to return the marked scripts, had been dealt with. However, the department had not yet made any analysis of the new requests, either by subject or location.
