Trade secretary named
PA Wellington Mr Peter Donovan has been appointed Deputy Secretary, Department of Trade and Industry, the chairman of the State Services Commission, Dr Mervyn Probine, has announced. He succeeds Mr Derek Homewood who has been appointed Secretary for Transport, Dr Probine said. Mr Donovan became a clerk in the Wellington Office of the Industries and Commerce Department in 1957.
After three years in New Zealand’s Trade Offices in Melbourne and Sydney, he was seconded as private
secretary to the Minister of Industries and Commerce for three years from October, 1964. After a period in the Trade and Policy Division of the department, he was appointed Trade Commissioner at the New Zealand Embassy in Paris for four years. On his return to New Zealand in August, 1976, he was promoted to be director of the Prices and Stabilisation Division. Three years later he transferred to the position of director, Trade Policy (Australia and International Organisation) Division.
From January, 1981, until
March, 1982, when he was appointed to his present position as assistant secretary (Commerce), Mr Donovan served as Minister Commercial and Senior Trade Commissioner in the New Zealand High Commission, Canberra. Since August, 1982, he has held the statutory office of Examiner of Commercial Practices.
Mr Donovan, who has a Bachelor of Commerce degree, has represented New Zealand at various trade meetings overseas including those organised by E.C.A.F.E., G.A.T.T. and O.E.C.D.
