Discussions on tank
A settling tank to dispose of liquid wastes from industrial sludge may be built in Christchurch. This possibility will be discussed soon by representatives of the Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee and the Christchurch Drainage Board. The Refuse Committee yesterday decided that three of its members would approach the Drainage Board for a joint discussion on the matter. The closing of a private tip in McTeigues Road last month left nowhere for Christchurch waste collectors to dump industrial sludge. The sludge is now. being disposed of at the Waimairi Beach landfill site as an interim measure. The building of a settling tank will be considered at the joint discussion. A report by the committee’s project engineer, Mr Arthur Vogan, said a settling tank would simplify
the work of both parties in dealing with industrial sludge. Mr Vogan said that the Drainage Board might expect some financial help from the Refuse Committee in setting up the tank. The tank would deal with liquid wastes, and solids would be taken to the landfill. Machinery The committee approved the purchase of about $236,000 worth oi extra equipment, including about $183,000 for a tractor and trailer unit, for the Parkhouse Road station. The equipment has been ordered in advance to take advantage of pre-devalua-tion prices. Half-price days Two half-price days being held to promote the new Metropolitan Refuse Station in Ruru Road will also be considered as the committee’s contribution to the
Clean New Zealand week campaign, to be held between October 6 and 13. Half-price days will be held at Ruru Road on Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 14, to help promote the new station. Charge accounts Committee staff will meet the Christchurch Road Transport Association to discuss monthly charge accounts at refuse disposal sites. Contractors using the sites are required to have a deposit account at present to avoid bad debts. Many contractors want monthly charge accounts, and the committee’s financial secretary, Mr P. W. Chapple, said big contractors that committee staff knew well should be allowed them. Mr Chapple said that one contractor was paying $3OO a day in dumping charges at present, and another $lBO a day.
