Decision seen as a ‘tragedy’

PA Wellington The Government’s decision to speed up plans to reintroduce compulsory union membership was a tragedy for New Zealand workers, said the Opposition spokesman on employment, Mr Jim Bolger, yesterday. It was clear the trade unions had twisted the Government’s arm to move more quickly to remove the right of workers to decide whether to join a union, he said.

The Labour Government’s proposed Bill of Rights would enshrine those rights which the trade unions did not object to.

“Under a Labour Government trade union demands clearly come before workers’ rights in New Zealand,” Mr Bolger said.
