Amalgamation aid likely

By PATRICIA HERBERT in Wellington The Government would be prepared to use some public money to achieve exensive union amalgamation, said the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, yesterday. “We want to end the existing fragmented structure where unions spend too much of their funds on running costs,” he told the Wellington Clerical Workers’ Union’s annual conference in New Plymouth. He also said that the idea

of a single central organisation to replace the Federation of Labour and the Combined State Unions had come of age and that, as far as he was concerned, it could not come into being quickly enough. Mr Rodger said he proposed to establish an industrial relations advisory council, representing both employers and unions, to discuss all industrial legislation before it was introduced in Parliament. He said he would convene and preside over regular meetings of the council.
