Devil Gold wins fourth on end
PA Auckland Devil Gold extended his winning sequence to four in capturing the Heritage handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Ellerslie yesterday. Ridden by Grant Cooksley, Devil Gold trailed the leaders, Jetset Go and Gold Mary, to the home turn. In the last 100 metres, Devil Gold caught Jetset Go, scoring by half a length. Jetset Go was one and a quarter lengths clear of thiru-placed Madam Ex, with Jimbil, Gold Mary and Zamarino next. The Ellerslie trainer, Frank Ritchie, now plans to give Devil Gold a spell, then have him back for racing in October.
"I’m sure he’ll come up again,” said Ritchie. "It should be easy ground by then, and that’s what suits him best.” Devil Gold’s previous three successive wins were at Avondale (1600 m Pukekohe (2200 m and Paeroa (2200 m Residue, ridden by Leigh Massey, came with a strong run to win the second leg, the Huia Handicap. Our Charlie, which was making a fresh start, shot to the lead early in the run home, but Residue soon gathered him in. At the post, Residue was three-quarters of a length clear of Our Charlie, with four and a half lengths back to the third placed horse, Cumberland, the favourite. Glenstrae was next with Matthew Ryan fifth and Starsun sixth. Boilermaker was last.
