Swimming records set

Six Canterbury and two Eastern Districts swimming records were broken at the Pegasus meeting at the 'Wharenui pool last week-end. The most successful swimmers were Dallas Hibbs (New Brighton) and Charlotte Freeman (Hampstead), both of whom set two records. Hibbs set his first record in the 11 years and under 100 m backstroke with a time of Imin 17.625. The old record was 1:18.99. His second record came in the 100 m butterfly with a time of 1:13.50 in the heat and 1:12.89 in the final. The old time was 1:17.46. Freeman, aged 13, set records in the 13 years 100 m freestyle and also in the 13, 14

and 15 years 400 m freestyle. Her times were 1:06.36 and 4:51.00, respectively. Other Canterbury records set were:Boys’ nine years.- Sean Hibbs (New Brighton), 100 m backstroke, 1:27.08 (1:28.4); Girls’ 10 years: Sarah Ellison (Wharenui), 100 m breaststroke, 1:31.38 (1:33.66); Girls’ 12 years: Linda Robinson (Wharenui), 4x25m medley, 1:39.50 (1:40.5); Boys’ 11 years: Haydn Woolley (New Brighton), 4x25m medley, 1:45.82 (1:46.77). More than 500 swimmers from Nelson to Timaru completed at the carnival, the first big meeting of the winter programme.
