Police inquiry into rifle shots
A local resident helped the police with inquiries yesterday after it was reported that the Electricity Division’s yard off Jacks Pass Road, Hanmer Springs, was under fire from rifle shots.
Constable Peter Gilfedder, of the Hanmer Springspolice, said he had a report about 10 a.m. that projectiles were landing in the yard. Police were called in from Culverden, Waikari, Rangiora, and Kaiapoi to assist. “The matter has been re-
solved. A local residenthelped with inquiries and we are well satisfied that the explanation is correct,” said Constable Gilfedder. There were no arrests at this stage, he said. The police had made an extensive search in the area. No-one was harmed in the incident and no property was damaged. The shots were from a .22 calibre rifle. “We are satisfied that people in the area are not at risk,” Constable Gilfedder said.
