Prices remain firm for all prime stock classes

Prices for all types of prime stock remained firm at a quiet Addington market yesterday. The beef market fluctuated slightly because of the varying quality of the cattle and prime lambs and sheep were steady. Farmer interest in store sheep was high and a small selection of in-lamb ewes sold extremely well. Prices remained buoyant for ewes with lambs at foot, but store pig prices dropped $5 to $6. Prime lambs Light to medium prime lambs sold strongly in the prime lamb pens, and increased slightly in price. Demand for heavy butchers’ lambs was steady. Several pens of heavy lambs exceeded $3O and good lambs regularly made between $25 and $2B. The yarding was 1287 compared with 1117 last week. Values were:— Heavy lambs, to $32.40. Prices for some pens of old ewes were slightly dearer than last week’s sale but over all, the old ewe market was firm/ Good ewes carrying plenty of wool sold to $2l and shorn ewes were about $l6. , Hoggets had a steady sale. The inclusion of several good quality hoggets contributed to the demand being slightly stronger than last week’s. The total yarding was 1580, about 150 fewer than last week’s market.

Values were:— Best hoggets, to $27. Medium hoggets, $24.40 to $26. Light hoggets, $2O to $23. Best shorn old ewes, to $16.60 with woolly ewes to $2l. Medium old ewes, $13.40 to $15.60. Well-finished cattle continued to sell strongly at prices, reflecting the export schedule increases. The over-all quality of the cattle was mixed and typical of late winter markets. Cows again sold particularly well. Two Angus cross steers from Currie and Wareing, Ashburton, topped the market at $1142 and $lOOO, and a Murray Grey heifer from Tenterden Downs, Hawarden, made $668. Friesian cows from Miller Holdings, Motukarara, sold to $672. The yarding was 298 compared with 375 last week. Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 218 c and 228 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to. 270 kg, 218 c and 228 c; and over 270 kg, to 235 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $9OO with odd sales to $1142. Prime medium steers, $550 to $646. Prime light steers, $470 to $540. Prime heavy heifers, to $668. Dairy cows A huge yarding of almost 120 dairy cows, including about 70 capital stock cows from one farmer, attracted a good gallery of buyers from local districts and Mid-Canterbury. Among the capital stock sales, mated Jersey cows made $375 to $3BO, Jersey heifers $235 to $470, mated Friesian heifers $335 to $450, and mated Friesian cows $370 to $530. Only one pen of good quality, attractive in-lamb ewes was offered, a small line of woolly Border cross which made $29. Mixed quality in-lamb ewes sold from $l6 to $23. , Ewes with lambs at foot also sold buoyantly, several woolly ewes with well-grown lambs exceeding $l6 (all counted). Prices for shorn ewes and those accompanied by smaller lambs appeared to be slightly dearer than last week’s market. Most sales were between $l4 and $l6 and few sold for less than $l3. Prices remained steady for a small yarding of store wether hoggets. Good quality woolly wether hoggets sold to' $25 and Romney ewe hoggets made to $26. Sales included:— G. B. Light to medium bacon, $ll4 to $126. Heavy bacon, to $l4O. Light choppers, $llO to $llB. Heavy choppers, $136 to $lBO. Store pigs A big yarding of store pigs did not sell with the same buoyancy of recent markets. Values for all types of pigs were back $5 to $6. Little

outside buying power was evident. Breeding stock had a strong sale. Good quality sows and litters made to $620. Values were:— Small weaners, $35 to $42. Good weaners, $43 to $49. Slips and small stores, $52 to $62. Large stores, to $7O. Unfinished pork, to $B5.
