Youth on attempted murder charge
A youth will appear in the Timaru District Court today charged with attempted murder as a result of an incident in the city on Friday in which a picture theatre manager was stabbed. The youth, aged 18, described by the police as being from the Timaru region, was arrested about 1.30 p.m. yesterday. Information from the public had helped the police inquiry, said a spokesman for the Timaru police last evening. The stabbed man, Mr Gavin List, was last evening reported in a satisfactory condition at Timaru Hospital. Mr List, the manager of the Majestic picture theatre in Stafford Street, suffered serious stomach wounds when he was attacked in Turnbull Street about 5 p.m. on Friday. The incident happened after Mr List had discovered that someone had broken into a confectionary bar at the theatre. The intruder fled through the back of the theatre, into Turnbull Street, and Mr List followed, apparently about 30 seconds later. A bystander told Mr List that the intruder was hiding behind a parked car. Mr List was stabbed as he tried to apprehend the youth, who then ran off down Turnbull Street.
