Best result in golf year

NZPA Frankfurt Bob Charles will head for the Swiss golf open “pretty happy” with his joint third in the West German event. He said that it was his best result in a “disappointing” year. The New Zealand lefthander slipped from a three-stroke lead to share third as two other players scored superbly on the last day yesterday. Charles, aged 48, said after his par round of 71; “I needed a 66 to win, and I never really hit anything close, except for the last hole.” A seven-under par last round took the Australian, Wayne Grady, from his overnight second equal to a total of 268 and the West German title. His final round of 64 was eclipsed, though, by the Canadian, Jerry Anderson, who carded a record 63 and improved from sixth to second on 269. Charles birdied the last hole to share third place on 12-under par 272 with the Swede, Anders Forsbrand,

and the Briton Sam Torrance. He earned $14,500. The New Zealander said of his last round: “It was one of those days. I never made any putts, nothing. Yesterday everything went my way.” Charles’ third round produced a six-under 65, when he said he hit the ball close to the green and putted well, birdieing five of the last seven holes.
