Format change proposed

New Zealand’s Rothmans League and regional league soccer clubs are to be asked to study a proposal for splitting the country’s premier competition into two divisions for the 1987 season. No change is to be made to the format until the present contract with the sponsor expires at the end of the 1986 season. The proposal came at the N.Z.F.A. council meeting last week-end from the association’s deputy chairman, Mr Warwick Gendall.

The plan is for the top eight teams in the 1986 league to form a first division with the bottom four, along with the three regional league winners and one other team to make up a second division. The scheme calls for automatic promotion and relegation of one team between the divisions, but for entry to the second division to come through application, as is the case in the English Football League’s fourth division.
