Training trip brings injury

PA Auckland A Morrinsville College student with a suspected fractured skull was flown to Auckland from the training ship Spirit of Adventure on Monday. The student, Marcel Tipuna, aged 16, was hurt when a bunk fell on him early on Monday while the Spirit of Adventure was at Whangaparapara, Great' Barrier Island. An ambulance officer accompanied him on the small amphibian plane but the youth was able to walk off the plane unaided. The operations director for the Spirit of Adventure Trust Board, Commander Bob Lawry, said it was the first time any student had been brought back to Auckland from a training trip. He said almost 6500 students had been on the programme but he could not recall any other serious injury.
