Rail backlog at Picton

Continuing problems at Picton railyards caused a backlog of nearly 300 rail waggons yesterday. On Saturday the Aratika sailed from Picton 30 minutes after berthing without loading freight. The acting traffic manager in Blenheim, Mr Gary Forster, said that this was to allow the ferry to catch up on lost time caused by previous delays. The Arahura later sailed to Wellington without un-

loading freight because of a dispute between shunters and an engine driver. It was the only sailing not to be shunted during the weekend. Mr Forster said that although a work to rule was being enforced by the shunters, it was other problems that led to ferry delays and cancellation of freight trains. Sailings were expected to be running normally today and the backlog cleared.
