Primary products share declines
PA Wellington New Zealand is less dependent on its three main primary products, which now total less than half the value of New Zealand’s overseas trade. The latest figures from the Statistics Department show meat, dairy and wool
exports comprised only 48.1 per cent of total trade for the year ended June, 1984. Manufactured goods such as timber, and horticulture and iron sands were becoming increasingly important components of trade. Primary products comprised 54.8 per cent of exports during the previous financial year and were worth $4213.6 million. The three main products dropped to $4107.5 million this year. Total trade was $8533.3 million. The United States has slipped from being New Zealand’s number one trading partner. Japan and Australia are now New Zealand’s most important partners, taking 29.8 per cent of export purchases between them.
