Joke turns sour for Irishman
NZPA-AAP London A Dublin joke shop owner turned a long battle with parking inspectors into a profitable siaeline by selling his tickets to American tourists for one Irish pound (about $1.98) each. However, the inspectors had the last laugh when Edward Lawlor went to jail for the first of what is expected to be a series of seven-day sentences for unpaid fines, the “Guardian” newspaper said. Lawlor refused to pay
almost daily parking tickets for 2% years and ignored all resulting court cases. He believed he should have been allowed to park his van in the loading zone outside his shop and to make his battle public he put the tickets in his shop window. “It started off as a joke,” his shop assistant Cathy Cavanagh, said. “Then a few tourists came in and asked how much they were and we started selling them.”
