Mondale praises Ferraro

NZPA-Reuter North Oaks, Minnesota The Democrats leader, Mr Walter Mondale, said yesterday that his running mate, Miss Geraldine Ferraro, had showed leadership and strength in her handling of the disclosure of her family’s financial information. “I congratulated her on a superb performance. She conducted herself with

great skill, and intelligence, and she showed strength under challenging circumstances,” Mr Mondale said. The Democratic presidential candidate, smiling and appearing relaxed, also said that Miss Ferraro might have been subjected to more scrutiny because she was a woman and not the principal wage earner in her family.

Miss Ferraro yesterday faced a two hour questioning session on a nationally televised news conference about her taxes and her husband’s business dealings. She answered probing questions with composure. “I found her most persuasive and most impressive. What’s happened here is really a first in American history. This has been the

most comprehensive disclosure of financial and business affairs perhaps ever by a national candidate,” said Mr Mondale. Miss Ferraro said, “The issue is not my tax returns — they’re out and we’ve paid more than our fair share of taxes,” she said. “The issue is the future of the United States under Reagan.”
