Colts beat Southland
The Canterbury Colts rugby team made a successful start to its season when it beat Southland Colts, 1810, at Rugby Park yesterday. , However, after a strong start, which brought it 15 points in as many minutes, Canterbury was hardpressed to contain a lively Southland pack and it was only a dropped goal five minutes from the finish that made the game safe. Tom Coughlan won Canterbury a lot of clean lineout ball and Bruce Harris had an impressive game off the side of the scrum. The backs moved the ball well on occasions with the two wings, James Lloyd and Dean Kilworth in dashing form. But for most .of the second spell Canterbury was outplayed in both the forwards and backs, with Murray Brown, at full-back, Terry Laidlaw, at first fiveeighths, and Brent Shepperd and Brian Palmer, in the forwards, having excellent games for Southland. Kilworth and Glen Wisker scored tries for Canterbury. Greg Coffey converted them both and kicked a penalty goal and a dropped goal. Braedon Murray and Chris Swale scored Southland’s tries, and Michael Cox kicked one conversion.
