Warning over hockey funds
Hockey associations throughout New Zealand face the prospect of increased levies if they are not prepared to support fund-raising campaigns organised by the New Zealand Hockey Association. The chairman of the N.Z.H.A., Dr B. R. Penfold, told the management committee of the association last evening that provincial associations “would have to have the facts put on the line.” He was speaking during a discussion on fund-raising and after the committee had been told that permission had been refused by the Internal Affairs Department to run a national “snowball” raffle. “Associations have to be told that if they do not support the national association’s fundraising proposals then they would have to pay higher tour levies.” “Associations cannot be
given the option of opting out completely from assisting with fund-raising as some have done in the past” The manager of the New Zealand Olympic hockey team in Los Angeles, Mr Dave Coulter, told the meeting that there was the prospect of a visit by the Dutch team in October next year. Mr Coulter said the Dutch were interested in playing games in New Zealand on their way to the Champions Trophy tournament in Perth. The New Zealand men’s hockey team did not return with a medal from the Olympics but it did return with a trophy. It won the Fair Play Trophy awarded to the team with the least number of warning cards from the umpires. The New Zealand team won a similar trophy at the World Cup tournament in Bombay two years ago.
