Lauda triumphs

NZPA-AFP Zeltweg, Austria Niki Lauda celebrated a triumphant homecoming at Zeltweg, Austria, yesterday, by winning the Austrian Grand Prix for the first time in his long career, while at the same time taking the lead in the world driver’s championship standings. Lauda recorded a time of Ihr 21min 12.855, beating Nelson Piquet (Brazil) and

Michele Alboreto (Italy). There was an abundance of drama, particularly at the start when the race was halted after only one lap. The reason given was that the starter had switched his lights straight from red to green, missing out the obligatory orange which caused much consternation among the drivers on the grid. McLaren has now won eight of this year’s 12 races, with four left in the 1984 season.
