Miss Morris, four times the New Zealand champion, is placed behind the defending titleholder, Christine Lee, of Auckland, but the determined left-hander will have a tough task to overcome the Aucklander, who has improved markedly over the last two years. Three Japanese players head the open men’s singles field. Hirouki Abe, who is ranked thirty-ninth in the world, is the top seed; Masahiro Maehara, ranked forty-fourth, is the second seed, and Ichiro Hoshino is

placed third. The Japanese team will play three tests while in New Zealand, as well as competing -in the national championships. The fourth seed is the well-performed Victorian, Bob Tuckett, while New Zealand’s best placed player is Barry Griffiths, the young Aucklander, at five. Two South Australians, Robert Javor and Neil Ward, fill the minor seedings,, along with Peter Jackson, of Auckland. The best-ranked Cantabrian in the junior events is the young Avonside player, Karl Entwistle. He is seeded third in the under-16 boys singles, while Grant McCarroll, of Riccarton, is seeded eighth in the under-18 boys singles event.
