Timaru could reduce feature races
The Timaru Trotting Club will not run a heat of the D.B. Flying Fillies Series this season and there is every possibility that othere feature events will be deleted from the six meetings to be run at Washdyke. The present committee had adopted recommendations which will be placed before the new committee which will take office after the club’s annual meeting next month, said the president, Mr Des Mulcahy. The Couplands Flying Mile, for fast-class pacers, and the D.B. Trotting Free-for-all, for the top trotters, are likely to be discontin-
ued, while the class of the Timaru Cup might be loosened from C 6 last season. “We intend retaining the Challenge Stakes, for three-year-olds, and the Timaru Nursery Stakes,” said Mr Mulcahy. “It has taken us many years to build up a series of feature races, but unfortunately we have not always received the support we felt we deserved from owners and trainers. We have shown another loss for the past 12 months and the committee has had no option but to review programmes right across the
board. We have to try and work our way out of our current financial situation,” he added. Mr Mulcahy pointed out that the situation could change before the end of September should any taxation relief be included in the Budget. If that occurred, the position regarding programmes would be re- x viewed. The club will have a new secrtetary this season, Mrs Heather George having been appointed to succeed Mr Colin Mckenzie, who has resigned after holding the position for more than 20 years.
