Protective properties

“There is increasing gl74evidence to support the importance of dietary fibre (the components of the plant cell Walls) in the maintenance of health. In addition to ensuring that there is good bowel function, dietary fibre has protective '* ' properties against degenerative diseases such as

coronary atheroma, vascular disease, cancer of the bowel and breast, gallstone formation and diabetes. Dietary fibre can be increased by taking additional cereals; additional root vegetables; green vegetables and fruits; or by' 1 ' additlbhaf .cereal supplements such as bran. The need for supplementation is dependent on the basic food pattern. As with all. nutrients there is ah optimum intake of dietary fibre. Because a little is good it Is not, necessarily true that a lot will be better. People can eat too much dietary fibre. If there are any doubts as to the amount of fibre that should be taken, advice should be obtained. Professor C. TasmanJones, Dept, of Medicine, University of Auckland.
