Science fiction

Over the next three weeks, the radio National programme will present three 8.8. C. dramatisations of stories by eminent twentieth century science fiction writers. The stories have been adapted as 90-minute plays and will be broadcast in two parts, the first for an hour beginning at 7.30 p.m. and the second for half an hour after the 8.30 p.m. News and Weather. For each of the plays, the science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, best known for his “2001: A Space Odyssey,” provides a personal introduction, set-

ting the scene and providing background to the story. Tonight’s story is “The First Men in the Moon” by H. G. Wells, and featuring the TV actor, Hywel Bennett. The year is 1900. As a result of discovering a substance that defies gravity, Cavor, an idealistic man of science, finds himself in a sphere heading for the Moon with a likeable young opportunist called Bedford.
