Milburn well placed

Mark Milburn, of Christchurch, appears to have a good chance of winning a bronze medal at the world youth yachting championships, being held off San Diego, California. After seven races of a scheduled 10-race series, Milburn is sixth in the Laser class of 18 entries with 53 points. In front of him are

competitors from the United States, 31.7 points; Italy, 34.8; Great Britain, 37; Canada, 48.4; and the Netherlands, 51.4. Milburn’s latest form is encouraging. After placings of eighth, ninth and tenth (twice), the New Zealander recorded a fifth and then won two races. There is a rest day today,

with two races scheduled for tomorrow and the last on Wednesday. The news is not as encouraging in the doublehanded 420 class. The Taupo crew of lan Stewart and Malcolm Pointon are twelfth in a fleet of 16. They have 94 penalty points, compared to 11 amassed by the leading Swiss crew.
