‘Solvent sniffing regarded seriously’
PA Wellington The Education Department regards solvent sniffing seriously and has already initiated a programme aimed at helping parents and teachers deal with it, says a departmental spokesman. Mr Peter Brice, assistant secretary of schools, was commenting on the death of an Upper Hutt youth after sniffing fire extinguisher gas. He said the department regarded this incident just as seriously as it did the problem of young people sniffing glue.
Over the last four of five years, his department had told teachers about the danger of solvent abuse but had been careful not to arouse the children’s interest said Mr Brice. The department had aimed its information at teachers and parents and had encouraged teachers to develop ways of dealing with the problem. The Health Department, Mr Brice said, had established a committee to consider how to handle the problem. The committee will report to the Minister of Health.
