Aranui’s easy win

Butler Auto Spares (men) and Big Softie-Aranui (women) continued on their way to Canterbury senior basketball championship honours with good wins at Cowles Stadium last evening. Both teams are now four points clear in their respective divisions with two games remaining. Aranui looks almost certain of regaining the women’s title after a fine display in defeating EdgellHalswell, 70-35. Admiral Lodge-Checkers, four points behind Aranui, had much the better of Continental Caterers-Rangiora, winning, 59-40.

Butlers, seeking its first men’s title for 10 years, had many uneasy moments against Businessworld Computers-Unl-versity, eventually edging out the students, 57-53. Earlier, Butlers led by 12 points, but midway through the second spell the scores were tied at 34-all. Butlers reovered but it was a disappointing display. The former New Zealand, Canterbury and Exchequer SaintsWellington player, Mike Stokes, made his first appearance for Butlers. He will play again on Saturday before moving to Australia.
