Rubbish dumped in reserve
Sir,-While driving on Marine Parade I saw two persons take barrow-loads of garden rubbish across the road and dump ftiem on
the Esplanade reserve. Why do some people along the parade consider it their right to use the reserve for rubbish disposal? I wonder how they would feel if residents from surrounding areas were to follow suit. Are these people ignorant of the by-laws on litter or do they just not care? What stand would the city council take if visual evidence of this practice was presented to it? — Yours, etc., C. E. JOHNSTON. July 21, 1984. [The General Manager and Town Clerk of Christchurch, Mr J. H. Gray, replies: “Action of the nature described is an offence under Section 15 of the Litter Act, 1979. When evidence is produced to identify the offence and the offender, legal action can be initiated. Our Parks and Recreation Department certainly deplores the dumping of rubbish on any reserve and would appreciate being informed promptly of details of any such incidents so that the matter can be followed up. It would be better though if offenders read this, and desisted.”]
