‘Gold medal’ for Games coverage
The Minister of Broadcasting, Mr Hunt, has awarded a “Gold Medal” to the Broadcasting Corporation for its radio and television coverage of the Olympic Games. ‘T. am writing to all staff involved in the complex exercise to thank them on behalf of the public for their achievements over the last two weeks,” said Mr Hunt. “It represented in the first place a huge commitment by the corporation of resources and staff two years in advance of events. The result has been that New Zealand has enjoyed live coverage of events, day and night, over the whole
period, and shared with its athletes their achievements at all levels. “This was a highly skilled application of modern technology and provided New Zealand with a vivid insight into the changes modern communications are bringing to its involvement with the world,” Mr Hunt said. The chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation, Mr lan Cross, said recently that the coverage of the Games would cost at least $3.5 million. He refused to say how much money the B.C.N.Z. would receive for advertisements broadcast during the Games coverage.
