Drama scholarships awarded by TVNZ
Three students have been awarded a Television New Zealand Drama Scholarship to Theatre Corporate, Auckland, for one year. The scholarship was initiated by Mr John Mcßae as head of drama with South Pacific Television and has recently been reinstated by Television New Zealand. The winners, Megan Edwards, Peter Mclntyre and Ross McKellar, are appearing in Theatre Corporate’s end-of-term production, “Cider With Rosie,” by Laurie Lee, from August 10 to 16. Megan Edwards was born in 1963. She was raised in Wellington and educated at Wellington Girls’ College. She studied classical ballet for 12 years, gaining her advanced certificate in Russian classical ballet. She participated in various amateur productions in Wellington before moving to Auckland in 1982 to further her acting career. During 1982-83 she took part in public classes at
Theatre Corporate and also attended the 1983 and 1984 New Zealand Theatre Federation/Theatre Corporate summer schools in Hawke’s Bay. She gained access to Theatre Corporate’s 1984 Professional training school, and recently shared the role of Portia in the school’s production of “The Merchant of Venice.” Peter Mclntyre was born in Henderson in 1957. He was educated at Henderson High School and the University of Auckland, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He performed in numerous plays at university and then travelled Europe for two years. In London, he took part in the Webber Douglas Academy for Dramatic Arts Summer Workshop. On returning to New Zealand, he took part in the University productions of “Richard III,” and “Mantrap,” New Independent’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Maids” at
Mercury H, before auditioning and being accepted for the Theatre Corporate School. Most recently he performed in the school's production of “The Merchant of Venice,” playing the roles Lorenzo, the Duke and Lancelot Gobbo. Ross McKellar was bom in Auckland in 1965. He was brought up 40 minutes north of Auckland on the Hibiscus coast and educated at Orewa College, attaining University Entrance and sixth Form Certificate in drama. He undertook various amateur acting productions over a period of six years, as well as working in other facets of theatre such as lighting, sound and stage management. He auditioned for and was accepted for Theatre Corporate’s 1984 Drama School for Professional Actors.
