Y.M.C.A. favoured
Y.M.C.A. last won the Canterbury senior men’s basketball championship 10 years ago, but this evening at Cowles Stadium it starts the three-round play-off series as favourite for the title. The team is now known as Butler Auto Sparcs-Y.M.C.A. and, after six preliminary rounds to find the final four teams for the play-offs, leads by two points, the result of five wins and a loss. Its only loss was to Aranui, which trails the leader by two points, with Businessworld Computers-University and last season’s champion, Vistalite Highschool Ola Boys, both on six points. Points from the
previous rounds carry through to the playoffs. Apart from lan Webb, who Is at present in South-East Asia with the New Zealand team, Y.M.C.A. will be at full strength this evening as will be the other semi-finalists. Y.M.CA. will play the improving University side. Y.M.C.A. beat University, 77-56, in the early rounds, but University has won its last three games, including a 56-47 success over Old Boys, the team it will meet this evening. On Saturday, Y.M.C.A. will play Old Boys and Aranui will meet Uhiversity in the penultimate round.
