Betting scandal probe in Hong Kong
NZPA Hong Kong The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club has launched an investigation into a betting scandal believed to involve a large number of the territory’s leading jockeys, it was reported yesterday. Investigations were being carried out into jockeys investing big sums of money on-course during race days. Officials of the jockey club, which controls both racing and off-course and on-course betting In Hong Kong, issued a statement which said its security department had been investigating allegations of betting by unauthorised persons. “The investigations are continuing and until they are completed we can say nothing more,*’ said a spokesman. The contingent of overseas jockeys was expected to return to Hong Kong within two weeks in preparation for the new season which begins on September 15.
The investigation was likely to send shock-waves through Hong Kong racing circles, the report said. It ■ was reported that jockey club officials, who have refused to make further comment on the matter, were likely to be meetingsoon to discuss the issue. The investigation followed last year’s English racing scandal when two jockeys were found guilty of illegally accepting gifts from a Derbyshire punter. One of them was banned for three years.
Penalties in Hong Kong can be even more severe for infringements, with life racing bans and very heavy fines.
