Towtay holds on to win at Taranaki

PA New Plymouth . The Hawera galloper, • Towtay, was rewarded for } some consistent efforts of late I with a win in the Dalgety ! Crown Handicap, first leg of the TA.B. double at the Taranaki Hunt Club's meeting , at New Plymouth yesterday. The six-year-old, which two ' starts back was a close second 1 to Nalu at Otaki, and a good fourth at his last start on the I first day of the two-day meeting at New Plymouth, was . well ridden by the apprentice jockey, Michael Thomas. The young rider settled Towtay midfield and sent him ' after the leader, Gold Shah, early in the run home. The pair took the lead but had to withstand a strong challenge from the favourite, Cattleman, over the later stages. Towtay, which is trained by Don Couchman, held on by a head, with Cattleman having to settle for second. Third home was Gold Shah ahead of Vincere. Aljustrel, trained at Stratford by Dick Bothwell, came with a determined finish to win the second leg, the Hire Centre Handicap. The five-year-old Turn the Tide gelding settled at the rear of the 11-horse field and made his run with about 600 m to go. The top jockey, David Walsh, elected to take Aljustrel wide. The combination came down the outer and, although he raced a little greenly, Aljustrel still won by three-quarters of a length from the win favourite, Decorate. Third home was Glenstrae ahead of Lama Bay. Results: TAB. CODE: TAKH, TN Weather overcast, track easy R. J. LANE MEMORIAL HURDLES fi $2800; 2600 m 7-7 HEAD SHEPHERD 3 63 P.
