Civil Rights and Dulico appeal at Ellerslie

Special correspondent Auckland With today’s Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie and the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, on Saturday week, to follow, the jumps season seems set to finish on a high note.

Civil Rights and Dulico, which are two of the nine horses left in the Winter Steeplechase field, both ran with distinction in the Great Northern when second and third, respectively. Treghan and Bart have meanwhile developed form which suggests that even in such company as this they could be hard to beat The performance Dulico put up in the Great Northern on a restricted preparation, was thoroughly meritorious. He raced well below that form when in Melbourne soon afterwards, but

has had a let-up in which to recover. At best he is a fine lumper with the pace to lead any steeplechase. Treghan and Civil Rights give Ann and Kenn Browne the chance to add yet another good jumps race to the many they have collected this year. The two geldings, both by Trelay, have won three steeplechases between them during the last 12 months and paid their way as well with numerous minor placings. Civil Rights, since the Great Northern, has had one

race for a third placing at Avondale on June 30. Treghan won at Avondale, a week earlier, and came fourth meanwhile of nine in the Wellington Steeplechase. Treghan might not have fulfilled all expectations, but it has to be said that for a nine-year-old he has not done a great deal of racing. Bukra, a Takanini gelding which made such an auspicious start to his racing when winning at Paeroa. on July 20, is a notable acceptor in the first leg of the treble, the Provincial Handicap.

A big fellow, by Barcas, Bukra came from last for a runaway win in a maiden 2200 m at Paeroa. He will be trying 2000 m this time, but on the new course which tests stamina. Jolly Jack, an impressive maiden winner at Pukekohe on August 4, has the chance to score his second success on end with the middle race of the treble, the Westminster Handicap. In the third one, Forty Thieves, Contrabandit, and Starsun are notable.
