Coffey leading rugby scorer
The Marist first fiveeighths, Greg Coffey, was the leading scorer in the Christchurch senior rugby competition this year. He finished with 178 points, only 10 short of the record set last year by Andrew McMaster (University). Coffey would probably have established a new mark if his ability had been known earlier. It was not until the fifth round that he took over the role of goalkicker and his scoring was spectacular in the next few games, 66 points in five games to be precise. Coffey set one new record this season, his 17 dropped goals beating the old mark by four. Eight other players scored a century of points. The eight, with their totals,
were:— Rod Latham (Christchurch), 165; Colin Williamson (Shirley), 149, Ross Adler (New Brighton), 146; McMaster, 143; Deane McKinnel (Burnside), 139; Brent Hutchinson (Belfast) and Jeremy Sprott (High School Old Boys), both 124, and Brent Nicoll (Sydenham), 101. A total of 540 tries were scored during the season, which is about the average for recent years. However, no individuals shone in this respect, and for the first time in a number of years no-one reached double figures. The top three try-scorers, all with nine, were Dale Atkins (University) and the Lincoln College pair, Brent Pope and Simon Anderson.
