Deans heads averages
The scoring feats by Robbie Deans in Australia have made him head of the alltime All Black rugby points averages. Deans has scored 131 Stints on the Australian ur to date, to add to the 52 he gained in England and Scotland last year. He has appeared in 14 matches, so his impressive average is about 13 points a game. His feat is even better than it seems, for in two Australian tour games he was a replacement wing, and did not kick for goal. Oddly enough, the man Deans has displaced at number one in the averages is not Allan Hewson but his predecessor as Christchurch and Canterbury full-back, Richard Wilson. He amassed 272 points, at an average of 11.3 a game. Hewson is third with 10.8, and with 348 points he has passed Joe Karam’s aggre-
gate and Billy Wallace’s total is in his sights. However, Fergie McCormick, who is second to Don Clarke in aggregates, is close behind Hewson in average—lo. 3 a game. The next best are Clarke, 781 points at 8.7, Karam, 345 at 8.2, and Wallace, 379 at 7.4.
