Dredge barge stays for maintenance

The McConnell Dowell barge Mac Dow Sands, which was used for the laying of the underwater section of the liquefied petroleum gas pipeline, will remain in port for several weeks for maintenance work. The dredging barge was brought from the North Island in January for the laying of the pipeline across the seabed from Corsair Bay to Rapaki Point. After completing the work several months ago, the barge has been tied up at Naval Point. It was removed from drydock yesterday after the completion of five days of maintenance and survey work by staff of Lyttelton Engineering, Ltd. Additional maintenance and repainting will be done during the next two weeks while the barge is tied up at Gladstone Pier. The barge, described by a McConnell Dowell spokesman as one of the company’s “more valuable assets," is used throughout New Zealand on marine projects. It is fitted with a 20-ton lift crane, two winches with a combined capacity of 80 tons and four mooring winches. It also has a large suction dredge and a helipad on the aft deck. The barge will be towed to her next project site once maintenance work has been completed. It has been worked by McConnell Dowell for about 10 years and was formerly owned by the Auckland Harbour Board. 9 Blueport A.C.T. (New Zealand), Ltd, has announced the appointment of Mr A. S. Adams as its New Zealand sales manager. Mr Adams took up the position on his return from a twoyear secondment with the Austasia Line in Singapore. Mr Adams joined the Blue Star Port Line in 1971 as marketing officer and was promoted to the position as the firm’s Auckland marketing manager in 1974. He served in the Royal New Zealand Navy from 1962 to 1970.
