Y.M.C.A. agrees to adopt code
PA Wellington The YMCA. movement in New Zealand has agreed to adopt a code of practice for its 14 health and fitness clinics.
Agreement was reached at the annual national council of Y.M.C.A.S' meeting. The code of practice sets minimum standards of fitness testing, exercise prescriptions, staff qualifications, training, facilities, and equipment.
The national chief executive, Mr Ross Grantham, said the code would protect the members who used the YMCA, health facilities. Mr Grantham said the Y.M.C.A. would invite other commercial clinics to join, thus creating a national organisation. “We believe effective testing and qualified staff are important," said Mr Grantham.
“The code is the most significant step we have taken over the last 12 months.
“We are going to market the Y.M.CA. health and fitness clinics, promote them properly, and use our reciprocal membership between Y.M.CAS.” Mr Grantham said the movement realised that some of the Y.M.C.A. clinics had yet to attain an acceptable standard.
Mr Lomond Seel, of Auckland, president of the national Y.M.C.A. council, told the meeting that voluntary agencies needed effective business management.
The Y.M.C.A.S had made changes in this direction but there was still a long way to go, he said.
“In spite of this, I am satisfied with the course the movement is travelling,” said Mr Seel.
