Public lecture on biodynamics

A public lecture by Mr Peter Proctor, of Hawke’s Bay, field advisory officer for the New Zealand Biodynamic Fanning and Gardening Association, will be one of the first activities .organised by the association’s newly formed Canterbury branch. The lecture will take the form of an introduction to biodynamic farming and gardening and will be held tomorrow at 275 Fifield Terrace, Opawa, at 8 p.m. Biodynamics is a form of agriculture encompassing organic farming techniques as well as several other principles. These include the use of plant and animalbased preparations which are sprayed on to the land or added to compost to regulate various processes in plants and soil; the avoidance of all agents which are poisonous to the environment and the use of a planting calendar which respects astronomical influences.

Biodynamic farming methods evolved from recommendations given in 1924 by an Austrian philosopher, Rudolf Steiner. Farmers had expressed concern to him about the deterioration of seed quality, declining soil fertility, and increasing animal health problems.
