Lawson clinches title

NZPA-AFP Anderstorp Eddie Lawson, of the United States, riding a Yamaha, clinched the world 500 cu cm motor-cycle title for the first time by winning the Swedish grand prix yesterday. lead over his nearest rival, a fellow American, Randy Mamola, with only one round of the championship remaining. Lawson needed only to finish fourth to ensure that he succeeded his compatriot, Freddie Spencer, as world champion. A collarbone injury forced Spencer to miss the last two races. The final round of the season is the San Marino grand prix at the Mugello circuit on September 2.
