Road safety and standards
Sir,—lt is with enormous relief that I note that something is being done about the accident rate on Christchurch roads. Before coming to live here I was told about Christchurch drivers, but thought people were being somewhat hysterical. Six months and numerous examples of unnerving disregard for safety later, my opinions are less than complimentary. The two drivers who passed me, one on the right, the other on my left, as I was waiting for a group of children to cross a pedestrian crossing in Rossall Street the other day have, between them, caused my opinions to take a further slide. I congratulate “The Press” for its interest although I would have thought that looking for dangerous drivers is no great challenge — it is the safe ones who appear to be in hiding.— Yours, etc., DEBORAH RITCHIE.
