Horse saved

A Polish horse has shot to unexpected fame after a failed attempt to kidnap it from an abattoir planned by a retired film star, Brigitte Bardot After the bungled attempt by a televison producer, Allain Bougrain-Du-bourg, the mare has now been reprieved on the intervention of the Agriculture Minister, Mr Michel Rocard, who confirmed his decision to Ms Bardot by telephone. It will now retire peacefully to a reserve run by the Brigade for the Protection of Animals. The mare is one of many horses imported from Poland to feed the French taste for horsemeat. Its plight apparently moved the abattoir employees, who tipped off Ms Bardot after it was found to have given birth to a foal. — Nice.
