Prayer bill passed
NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States House of Representatives today passed and sent to President Reagan a controversial bill allowing religious groups to hold meetings in public schools before or after classes. The bill, passed 337-77, is known as the Equal Access Bill, because it would give religious organisations the same right to use public schools as non-religious groups. The Senate passed the same bill last month. Supporters of the bill, including Mr Reagan, pressed for its passage after the Senate earlier this year rejected a Constitutional amendment to permit prayer in public schools. Opponents said that the measure would open the way for religious cults to use public schools. The bill would give local authorities the right to decide which groups could use schools.
