Staff shortage delaying Arthur’s Pass plan
A management plan for the Arthur’s Pass National Park was being delayed becausee of a lack of staff in the Lands and Survey Department, said the chairman of the North Canterbury National Parks and Reserves Board, Mr lan Calvert, yesterday. In his annual report presented yesterday, Mr Calvert said department staff were not at fault. But they were unable to provide the
services the board needed because of the “sinking lid” policy. The management plan had got Ministerial approval, but later it was found that additional sections could not be added to the already approved plan and the board was advised to review it. “While this in itself is frustrating, especially to members who have been
involved with the incomplete plan over the span of three boards, of greater concern is the fact that the Lands and Survey Department cannot at present provide the necessary staff to complete the plan,” said Mr Calvert. If the problem was not rectified soon the board should consider referring it to the National Parks Authority or, if necessary, the Minister, Mr Calvert said.
