PA Palmerston North A water-colour by Alfred Sharpe sold for $14,400 among keen competition at an auction of historic works by early New Zealand and European artists in Palmerston North on Wednesday. The 265 mm by 400 mm painting of a Waikato scene

by Sharpe, signed and dated 1877, was the top-priced offering. A Rita Angus oil fetched $12,000 and a large W. G. Baker and Lindauer’s portrait of Pare Watene made $lO,OOO each. About 100 works changed hands for a total of about $150,000.
