Bruce Smith to play?
The All Black wing, Bruce Smith, might yet play on New Zealand’s present tour of Australia, although specialists have told him that he has damaged ligaments in his right knee. The tour manager, Dick Littlejohn, said yesterday that the startling recovery of the Waikato three-quar-ter is making from the injury he incurred in the first test against Australia
five days ago encourages the belief that he should remain on tour. Specialists who have examined Smith have reported that he has ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee though earlier reports suggested he had suffered a medial ligament strain. Mr Littlejohn said Smith was recovering quickly and was moving freely yester-
day though his injury should still be causing him some discomfort. Smith’s future would be decided after obtaining a third opinion on the injury, he said. A replacement is available for Smith as the North Auckland and New Zealand Maoris wing, Kawhena Woodman, arrives today, along with Mark Shaw, who returned home last Sunday on a short period of compassionate leave.
