Cantamath entries a record

A record number of team entries has been received for this year’s Cantamath exhibition on August 2 and 3.

Cantamath 1984 is a mathematics display and competition organised by the Canterbury Mathematics Association for primary, intermediate, and junior secondary school pupils in Canterbury and Westland.

Its aim is to encourage an interest in mathematics. Models, designs, posters, written work, and computers will be on display as well as the teams’ competition.

More than 230 teams have entered the competition. Each team of four pupils will sit a half-hour quiz of 20 puzzle and complication problems.

The computer section is new this year and about 12 entries are expected.

The exhibition will be held in the main auditorium of the Christchurch Town Hall and will be open on Thursday, August 2, from 1 p.m to 9 p.m. and on Friday, August 3, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Judging will take place on Thursday morning and the teams’ competition on Thursday and Friday evenings. Admission is free.
