Avenue subway supported

The improvement of Deans Avenue and the construction of a pedestrian and cycle subway beneath it are the two main features of a sketch plan of traffic routes and access to the new $5.5 million Christchurch Girls’ High School. The plan, which also enables Matai Street to become part of the regional cycle route, has been agreed to in principle by a working party convened by the Canterbury United Council and comprising members of the Waimairi District Council, the Riccarton Borough Council, the Christchurch City Council, the Ministry of Works and Development, the Education Department, and the school’s board and its principal, Miss Joan Prisk. The working party has prepared another interim

plan which does not include the snbway, but allows for its construction later. The Canterbury United Council emphasised yesterday the urgency for the subway to provide safe access to the school. The subway will be included in the regional planning scheme so that it will be eligible for National Roads Board and Urban Transport grants. It is hoped that funding from those bodies will enable the subway to be built by the school’s expected opening in early 1986.
